Description: The wreckage of a village, "destroyed by the Russians in their retreat", shows damaged houses with clothing and artifacts abandoned outside them. German soldiers in a wood emerge from a deep and well-concealed dugout from which smoke is pouring. (According to the captions it has been set on fire by Russian shellfire.) Nearby is a German Army blacksmith's in the open air. The stables for the horses next to the blacksmith's are camouflaged by the soldiers to prevent aerial observation. At Lyck, just over the border in East Prussia, orderlies unload wounded on stretchers from a hospital train.
